Johnnie's Hot Pastrami Sandwich
Johnn'e's Pastrami
Over the years, there have been many reviews for Johnnie’s Pastrami located in Culver City, CA. It is described as the late night place to go, the place everyone visiting L.A. needs to experience. It is located in the same block as another well-known Mexican food icon in Culver City- Tito’s Tacos (That’s another food blog story I’ll have to do). Living in West L.A. I am happy to say we eat there anytime we please. Late night, lunch, brunch or snack. We introduce all our out of town visitors to Johnnie’s Pastrami. One of our North Carolina cousins insists that whenever we fly to NC we must bring her a Johnnie’s Pastrami Sandwich. It freezes though not well, but she loves it anyway.
Johnnie’s Pastrami has been in the same location since about 1952. There are two outside dining areas with a fire pit on each side of the building. It’s not much to look at but then that’s not what counts. There are other choices on the menu including corned beef, hamburgers, hotdogs, fries and the usual diner fares. Being a creature of habit we always have the same thing- Johnnie’s famous Pastrami Sandwich with a side of Onion Rings. This massive pile of hot pastrami on a bun lathered with mustard comes with a mass of kosher pickles and hot peppers. All wrapped in wax paper and packed in a box to go. The only limiting factor here is that one can not eat too many of these or your waistline will only continue to grow.
Did I fail to mention, this sandwich is to die for. You know you can't eat the whole thing yet your tastebuds fail to let you stop.

Thanks for that post! I havent been there in YEARS! I swear that sandwich got bigger though.
If it only were a few blocks from Titos I would be back in a flash...I just can't resist those tacos...
Wow, I haven't been there in years (though I remember having chili cheese fries late at night once in the last 6 months, but I don't remember how i got there, lol!)
will have to go back - i looooove pastrami! (And to think it's only just up the street from my office!)
I grew up in Culver City so Titos and Johnnie's were the places we ate. My future husband and I told my mother we were getting married at Johnnie's, that was 36 years ago!
I love your site, I've just been going through your archive.
I was born and raised in LA and my Mother lived on Adams Blvd just up the street from "JOHNNY'S". You know the one I'm talking about. I live in Atlanta now and I was just in LA for my mom's funeral but, I had to go to the KING of Pastrami. They have rude service sometimes but to me, they are the best. I'm 46 years old and I don't think I will ever find a place like this in the world. They are the BEST!
